Brainstorm is a German Power Metal band that by now is already a veteran, and has managed to maintain a respectable discography in its more than 30-year career, which reaches its 13th album with the release of this "Wall Of Skulls". The album was recorded at the Green Man Studios under the production of Seeb Levermann who is the vocalist and guitarist of the band Orden Ogan and who also participates in one of the songs on the album, the other collaboration was done by Peavy from Rage in one of the most powerful songs on the album. In total, they have 10 songs in no more than 40 minutes which tells us that they go straight to the point and without extending more than necessary. As expected, they bet on a Power Metal that clearly drinks from classic influences but with a sound, according to these times, where they sound powerful, direct and with a lot of hook, courtesy of the voice of Andy B. Franck. Without a doubt, this album is a must for Power Metal lovers, it has everything, great choirs, excellent guitars, epic keyboards and a devastating rhythmic base, in addition to showing that as long as there is inspiration the style can continue to move us as in its best times. And due to the release of this great album, we were able to interview Torsten Ihlenfeld, guitarist and founder of the band, who tells us about the album and the plans of the German band.

DARGEDIK: Welcome to Dargedik Webzine from Latin America. Thank you very much for taking the time to answer our questions Torsten! First of all, how have you been? How is the band after more than a year with this pandemic situation?

BRAINSTORM: The band is doing great. Thanks for asking.Of course, we re all missing live shows, open-air festivals, club shows, tours. Most of all, we miss the fans, the face-to-face contact, the talks, the reactions, the interaction but overall, we are doing fine. We ended the album-tour-festival-tour cycle for “Midnight Ghost” at the end of 2019, so things could have been a lot worse than things for sure are for most of us since the beginning of the pandemic.

DARGEDIK: You are releasing “Wall of Skulls” on September 17th. When did you begin with the process of composition and recording of this album? Did the pandemic change much the way you worked on this album?

BRAINSTORM: Well actually, we are always writing something but the real process starts after the end of the touring period for the last album, which luckily was shortly before Covid started. Due to this fact, we walked some extra miles during the songwriting process, as due to Covid all planned live shows and releases have been postponed anyway. Especially Andy did - at some point – almost start all over again with vocal lines and lyrics because he was not 100% satisfied with how it was at that moment. 

So we have been able to write very detailed, without including too many parts or getting too progressive and complicated though - but very focused on each song instead which definitely is something you can hear on each song on Wall Of Skulls. 100% focus was songwriting, rehearsing, recording, producing without getting interrupted by live shows or tours or the usual nights out with friends because everything was in a lockdown.

DARGEDIK: What differences can we find on this new record “Wall of Skulls” in comparison with the previous “Midnight Ghost?

BRAINSTORM: Wall Of Skulls is definitely not Midnight Ghost Part 2 but definitely breathes the same air and spirit. We raised the level with Midnight Ghost and we can raise it even more with Wall Of Skulls. We focused on our songwriting skills, focused on the songs, focused totally on the band to make Wall Of Skulls the best Brainstorm album to date. The songs are even more focused, more to the point with an unbelievable energy on one hand, on the other hand with filled so much dedication, passion and emotions that we enjoy every single song on Wall of Skulls absolutely to the maximum. From fast tracks to heavy mid tempo songs to even epic hymns, the album has it all.    

DARGEDIK: In the song “Escape the silence” we can listen to Peavy Wagner. How did you decide to invite him to collaborate on this song? How was the experience of working with him? 

BRAINSTORM: When we wrote "Escape The Silence", especially the mid part where Peavy sings, we felt this has to be done by him. I guess we even heard his voice and how it will sound like even before we asked him. Peavy is an absolute pro, a real metal legend and it is a great honor to have him as guest on Escape The Silence.

DARGEDIK: The singles that you released until now sound great! After more than 30 years as a band. What is the key to preserve such an energetic sound?                                                              

BRAINSTORM: Because we love what we are doing. We love making music, creating music, make music together and we are absolutely thankful that we can be doing this for such a long time now and we are still going strong. No end in sight and it feels great with every new song we can create.

DARGEDIK: I really like the album cover. What can you tell us about it? By the way, why did you pick up "Wall of Skulls" as the name for the album? 

BRAINSTORM: The album is very much about the cruelties of mankind in the history of mankind and what fits better than skulls. Behind every skull there is a story of a once human being, his adventures, his pain, his pleasure, his wars, his life, his dark secrets. We are telling the stories thereto on Wall Of Skulls.

DARGEDIK: What are your plans after releasing the album? Are there chances for touring again? What is your opinion about streaming shows since many bands can not go on a tour now? 

BRAINSTORM: Yes, we have a tour planned for September, October and November all over Europe and we are still optimistic that this can happen. Fingers crossed! 

We also did a very cool streaming show for our fans earlier this year which was streamed worldwide with an amazing feedback from our fans and we even included this show as bonus DVD on the limited edition of Wall OF Skulls.

DARGEDIK: How do you see the Metal Scene nowadays? How is the situation for Metal Bands in your country now because of the pandemic? Do you have time to listen to new bands? 

BRAINSTORM: Yes, I always listen to music, discover new music, new bands. Great to see that there is so much incredible talent out there. Of course, the pandemic situation is difficult for all bands but we can either do nothing but complaining or try to make the best out of the situation. Create new music, work on your musician skills and so on.

DARGEDIK: For young people that are discovering Metal, if they are going to listen to Brainstorm for the first time, Which album would you recommend to them? 

BRAINSTORM: Our amazing best of double CD “Just highs, no lows” because you have 12 years of Brainstorm on there AND both Midnight Ghost/ Wall Of Skulls, which represents the band in absolute top form! 

DARGEDIK: In more than 30 years as a band you have seen a lot of changes in the Metal scene. For example nowadays you can record an album without going to an studio, people can find a lot of music and bands in streaming services or bands can be supported by fans through platforms like Patreon. In your opinion, Is it more difficult or easier to have a band nowadays? 

BRAINSTORM: I think the bottom line still is the same: Be patient, you do not become a good musician and a good songwriter overnight. Take your time, make your experiences, get to know how to play live, stay true to yourself, do it your way but hear what experienced colleagues have to say, do not make avoidable mistakes just for the sake of maybe getting a shitty record deal, don’t sell your soul. The right offer comes to the right time and until then, rehearse, learn your lessons and enjoy making music. What a great gift for those who discover this!   

DARGEDIK: As part of Brainstorm you had the chance to tour with many bands in all these years. Is there any band that you would like to tour with but you haven't yet? Or any musician that you would like to work with? 

BRAINSTORM: That’s so many and there really have been so many dreams come true already but imagine a band with Freddy and Lemmy on vocals, Dimebag Darrel and Chris Oliva on guitars, Phil Lynott and Cliff Burton on bass and Mozart and Beethoven on piano and orchestra – One hell of a band making heavenly music!

DARGEDIK: Before we finish, Can you send a message to all your fans in Latin America? Have you had the chance to listen to some Metal bands from this part of the world? 

BRAINSTORM: Thanks to the digital plattforms you can nowadays listen to metal and music in general from all over the world. As much as it is boon and bane, both a blessing and a curse, this is something really good about nowadays. You can discover new music from all over the planet.

To our fans in Latin America, thank you all so much for all your support over the years. Someday hopefully we will be returing to Latin America when all this pandemic Covid restrictions are behind us and we are all free again to enjoy doing what we love most. Celebrating music together with all our fans on real live shows for real people. Stay strong, stay healthy, and until we meet again – the sooner, the better!!!

El disco fue grabado en los Green Man Studios bajo la producción de Seeb Levermann quien es vocalista y guitarrista de la banda Orden Ogan y quien también participa en una de las canciones del álbum, siendo la otra colaboración, la de Peavy de Rage en otro de los temas más potentes del álbum. En total cuentan con 10 canciones en poco más de 40 minutos lo cual nos habla que van de frente al grano y sin extenderse más de la cuenta. Como es de esperarse apuestan por un Power Metal que bebe claramente de lo clásico pero con un sonido acorde a estos tiempos, en donde suenan potentes, directos y con mucho gancho cortesía de la voz de Andy B. Franck. Sin duda este disco es obligado para los amantes del Power Metal, tiene de todo, grandes coros, excelentes guitarras, épicos teclados y una base rítmica demoledora, además que demuestra que mientras haya inspiración el estilo puede seguir emocionándonos como en sus mejores épocas. Y debido al lanzamiento de este gran disco, pudimos entrevistar Torsten Ihlenfeld, guitarrista y fundador de la banda, quien nos comenta sobre el disco y los planes de la banda alemana.

DARGEDIK: Bienvenido a Dargedik Webzine de América Latina. ¡Muchas gracias por tomarse el tiempo para responder a nuestras preguntas, Torsten! En primer lugar, ¿cómo has estado? ¿Cómo está la banda después de más de un año con esta situación de pandemia?

BRAINSTORM: La banda está muy bien. Gracias por preguntar. Por supuesto, todos estamos extrañando los shows en vivo, festivales al aire libre, shows en clubes, giras. Sobre todo, extrañamos a los fans, el contacto cara a cara, las charlas, las reacciones, la interacción, pero sobre todo, nos va bien. Terminamos el ciclo del álbum, gira, festival, gira de “Midnight Ghost” a fines de 2019, por lo que las cosas podrían haber sido mucho peores de lo que seguramente son para la mayoría de nosotros desde el comienzo de la pandemia.

DARGEDIK: Lanzarán "Wall of Skulls" el 17 de septiembre. ¿Cuándo empezaste con el proceso de composición y grabación de este disco? ¿La pandemia cambió mucho tu forma de trabajar en este álbum?

BRAINSTORM: Bueno, en realidad, siempre estamos escribiendo algo, pero el proceso real comienza después del final del período de gira del último álbum, que afortunadamente fue poco antes de que comenzara Covid. Debido a este hecho, avanzamos algunas millas adicionales durante el proceso de composición, ya que debido a Covid, todos los shows en vivo y lanzamientos planeados se han pospuesto de todos modos. Especialmente Andy, en algún momento, casi comenzó de nuevo con sus líneas vocales y letras porque no estaba 100% satisfecho con cómo era en ese momento.

Así que hemos podido escribir muy detalladamente, sin incluir demasiadas partes o volvernos demasiado progresivos y complicados, pero muy centrados en cada canción, lo que definitivamente es algo que puedes escuchar en cada canción de "Wall Of Skulls". El enfoque al 100% fue en escribir canciones, ensayar, grabar, producir sin ser interrumpido por shows en vivo o giras o las noches habituales con amigos porque todo estaba cerrado.

DARGEDIK: ¿Qué diferencias podemos encontrar en este nuevo disco “Wall of Skulls” en comparación con el anterior “Midnight Ghost?

BRAINSTORM: "Wall Of Skulls" definitivamente no es "Midnight Ghost" Parte 2, pero definitivamente respira el mismo aire y espíritu. Subimos el nivel con "Midnight Ghost" y podemos subirlo aún más con "Wall Of Skulls". Nos enfocamos en nuestras habilidades de composición, enfocados en las canciones, enfocados totalmente en la banda para hacer de "Wall Of Skulls" el mejor álbum de Brainstorm hasta la fecha. Las canciones están aún más enfocadas, más en su punto, con una energía increíble por un lado, por otro lado con tanta dedicación, pasión y emociones llenas que disfrutamos cada canción en "Wall of Skulls" absolutamente al máximo. Desde pistas rápidas hasta canciones pesadas de medio tiempo e incluso himnos épicos, el álbum lo tiene todo.

DARGEDIK: En la canción “Escape the Silence” podemos escuchar a Peavy Wagner. ¿Cómo decidiste invitarlo a colaborar en esta canción? ¿Cómo fue la experiencia de trabajar con él?

BRAINSTORM: Cuando escribimos "Escape The Silence", especialmente la parte media donde Peavy canta, sentimos que esto tiene que hacerlo él. Supongo que incluso escuchamos su voz y cómo sonará incluso antes de que le preguntáramos. Peavy es un profesional absoluto, una verdadera leyenda del metal y es un gran honor tenerlo como invitado en Escape The Silence.

DARGEDIK: ¡Los sencillos que lanzaron hasta ahora suenan muy bien! Después de más de 30 años como banda. ¿Cuál es la clave para preservar un sonido tan enérgico?

BRAINSTORM: Porque amamos lo que hacemos. Nos encanta hacer música, crear música, hacer música juntos y estamos absolutamente agradecidos de que podamos estar haciendo esto durante tanto tiempo y todavía estamos fuertes. No hay un final a la vista y se siente genial con cada nueva canción que podemos crear.

DARGEDIK: Me gusta mucho la portada del álbum. ¿Qué nos puedes contar al respecto? Por cierto, ¿por qué eligieron "Wall of Skulls" como el nombre del álbum?

BRAINSTORM: El álbum trata mucho sobre las crueldades de la humanidad en la historia de la humanidad y lo que encaja mejor que las calaveras. Detrás de cada cráneo hay una historia de un ser humano, sus aventuras, su dolor, su placer, sus guerras, su vida, sus oscuros secretos. Contamos sus historias en "Wall Of Skulls".

DARGEDIK: ¿Cuáles son sus planes después de lanzar el álbum? ¿Hay posibilidades de volver a salir de gira? ¿Cuál es tu opinión sobre las transmisiones en vivo, ya que muchas bandas no pueden ir de gira ahora?

BRAINSTORM: Sí, tenemos una gira planeada para septiembre, octubre y noviembre por toda Europa y todavía somos optimistas de que esto pueda suceder. ¡Dedos cruzados!

También hicimos una transmisión muy buena para nuestros fanáticos a principios de este año que se transmitió en todo el mundo con una respuesta increíble de nuestros fanáticos e incluso incluimos este programa como un DVD adicional en la edición limitada de "Wall OF Skulls".

DARGEDIK: ¿Cómo ves la escena del metal hoy en día? ¿Cómo es la situación de las bandas de metal en su país ahora debido a la pandemia? ¿Tienes tiempo para escuchar nuevas bandas?

BRAINSTORM: Sí, siempre escucho música, descubro nueva música, nuevas bandas. Es genial ver que hay tanto talento increíble ahí fuera. Por supuesto, la situación de la pandemia es difícil para todas las bandas, pero no podemos hacer nada más que quejarnos o intentar sacar lo mejor de la situación. Crea nueva música, trabaja en tus habilidades como músico, etc.

DARGEDIK: Para los jóvenes que están descubriendo el Metal, si van a escuchar Brainstorm por primera vez, ¿Qué álbum les recomendarías?

BRAINSTORM: Lo mejor de nuestro doble CD “Just high, no low” porque tienes 12 años de Brainstorm y ambos Midnight Ghost / Wall Of Skulls, ¡que representa a la banda en plena forma!

DARGEDIK: En más de 30 años como banda, has visto muchos cambios en la escena del Metal. Por ejemplo, hoy en día puedes grabar un álbum sin ir a un estudio, la gente puede encontrar mucha música y bandas en los servicios de transmisión o las bandas pueden ser apoyadas por fanáticos a través de plataformas como Patreon. En tu opinión, ¿es más difícil o más fácil tener una banda hoy en día?

BRAINSTORM: Creo que el resultado final sigue siendo el mismo: ten paciencia, no te conviertes en un buen músico y un buen compositor de la noche a la mañana. Tómate tu tiempo, crea tus experiencias, aprende cómo tocar en vivo, sé fiel a ti mismo, hazlo a tu manera, pero escucha lo que tienen que decir tus colegas experimentados, no cometas errores evitables solo por el simple hecho de conseguir un contrato discográfico de mierda , no vendas tu alma. La oferta adecuada llega en el momento adecuado y hasta entonces, ensaya, aprende tus lecciones y disfruta haciendo música. ¡Qué gran regalo para quienes descubren esto!

DARGEDIK: Como parte de Brainstorm, tuviste la oportunidad de hacer una gira con muchas bandas en todos estos años. ¿Hay alguna banda con la que te gustaría hacer una gira pero aún no lo has hecho? ¿O algún músico con el que te gustaría trabajar?

BRAINSTORM: Son tantos y ya se han hecho realidad tantos sueños, pero imagina una banda con Freddy y Lemmy en la voz, Dimebag Darrel y Chris Oliva en la guitarra, Phil Lynott y Cliff Burton en el bajo y Mozart y Beethoven en el piano y la orquesta. - ¡Una banda increíble haciendo música celestial!

DARGEDIK: Antes de que terminemos, ¿puedes enviar un mensaje a todos tus fans en América Latina? ¿Habéis tenido la oportunidad de escuchar algunas bandas de Metal de esta parte del mundo?

BRAINSTORM: Gracias a las plataformas digitales hoy en día puedes escuchar metal y música en general de todo el mundo. Por mucho que sea una bendición y una perdición, tanto una bendición como una maldición, esto es algo realmente bueno hoy en día. Puedes descubrir nueva música de todo el planeta.

En total cuentan con 10 canciones en poco más de 40 minutos lo cual nos habla que van de frente al grano y sin extenderse más de la cuenta. Como es de esperarse apuestan por un Power Metal que bebe claramente de lo clásico pero con un sonido acorde a estos tiempos, en donde suenan potentes, directos y con mucho gancho cortesía de la voz de Andy B. Franck. 

Las introducciones suelen ser algo genéricas para mi gusto, sin embargo "Chamber Thirteen" sale victoriosa pues es corta y los coros gregorianos suenan muy épicos, siendo la mejor forma de llevarnos a un tremendo himno de Power Metal Alemán como lo es "Where Ravens Fly" en donde la banda pone toda la carne en el asador, riffs cortantes, con mucho gancho, el doble bombo y la velocidad no se hace esperar mientras que los estribillos junto a los coros son simplementes estupendos, imposible no cantarla desde la primera escucha mientras que la cereza a este pastel es el gran solo de guitarra que nos regalan. "Solitude" por su parte es el típico himno para los conciertos, empieza con un coro muy pegadizo y épico antes de entrar de lleno a este tremendo medio tiempo. En "Escape The Silence" tenemos la colaboración de Peavy de Rage y es otro veloz himno de Power Metal bien logrado con uno de los mejores coros del disco, algo más pesado eso sí. Mientras que en "Turn Off The Light" tenemos otra colaboración, la de Seeb de Orden Ogan y nuevamente tenemos un resultado estupendo pues los estribillos y coros logrados nuevamente aquí mantienen la energía a tope en el disco. "Glory Dissappears" inicia lento y cuando parece que será la típica balada forzada, el tema mejora con unos coros muy melódicos y épicos que lo convierten en otra canción perfecta para los conciertos y en donde Andy B. Franck demuestra toda su clase como vocalista. Y cuando uno cree que no puede mejorar el álbum nos llega "My Dystopia" en donde la batería no da respiro, los riffs suenan afilados y pegajosos mientras que la voz luce un registro envidiable y una facilidad para lograr coros épicos que ya muchos quisieran tener en estos tiempos. El bajo y los teclados nos introducen a un medio más melódico como lo es "End Of My Innocence" en donde la voz muestra su lado más calmado y expresivo, logrando otro gran coro demostrando que no necesita alcanzar registros altísimos para enganchar.

Hacias la parte final escuchamos "Stigmatized (Shadows Fall)" que nos regresa a los temas veloces de riffs afilados que la banda sabe manejar muy bien y en donde la voz regala otro coro sencillo, directo pero épico aunque sin llegar al nivel de sus predecesoras. El trabajo de teclados en "Holding On" es estupendo en este medio tiempo melódico que está entre lo mejor del disco gracias al gran trabajo de guitarras y la voz que a estas alturas ya no sorprende, pues saben sacar lo mejor de si. Finalmente "I, The Deceiver" cierra el álbum, siendo otro himno metalero de sonido más clásico y directo que cumple aunque es opacado por otras canciones. Mucho mejor me resulta el galopante "Cold Embrace" que es un bonus track que aparece en ciertas ediciones. Sin duda este disco es obligado para los amantes del Power Metal, tiene de todo, grandes coros, excelentes guitarras, épicos teclados y una base rítmica demoledora, además que demuestra que mientras haya inspiración el estilo puede seguir emocionándonos como en sus mejores épocas.
